A sincere, robust enthusiasm for delicious, clean, fair food is what I have. As a registered dietitian (RD), food expert, and certified personal trainer, my belief is that wellness originates from nourishing the body with whole foods that are grown and tended close to home and utilizing that energy derived from this nutrition to move in ways that make you happy. My passion is to inspire people to eat wholesome, local, affordable and delicious food that makes them happy and healthy, and improves the environment and community in which we live.
I work as an RD (Registered Dietitian) and manager for a nationally-recognized program called Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters. I work with volunteer culinary and nutrition instructors to teach families at risk of hunger the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make healthy and affordable meals. The program improves dietary quality and nutrition knowledge, and help both child and adult participants to develop a love of fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods that they can carry with them for years to come.
I arrived in the place I am now through a series of unforgettable and ever-meaningful experiences. I am a UMass grad who developed a love for healthy and sustainable living while in Amherst. I often seized opportunities that would allow me to learn more about food, physical activity, my love for nutrition and give back to the communities that nurtured me. So, I organized 5K races for the local food bank, developed a community garden in my hometown, and wrote a thesis about the nutritional benefits of community gardening. Then I moved to a place where my love for food and healthy living flourished.
San Francisco.
Here, I developed a scandalous love affair with the farmers' market and the world of California-local food. On any given Saturday morning, I could be found heading to the Ferry Building (on nothing other than a scooter). I'd rush home, bunches of flowers hanging out of my backpack, waving to folks on the street, just to figure out what a quince tastes like or how to prepare figs. My dietetic internship at University of California San Francisco Medical Center gave me the scientific and medical basis for a career in dietetics. Then I moved back to Massachusetts. (The scooter stayed there.)
The proceeding years brought with them a Master's Degree from Boston University, a couple community nutrition jobs, and a certification to get people moving (the ACSM personal training certification.)
Now, I work, I eat, I blog, I train, I run, I cook, I have fun, I write, and I continue to develop my ideas about what food should be to me, you, and the greater beyond.
My blog title means “A Party For Food" because every meal should be a celebration. This blog started as an experience of getting a weekly box of fruits and vegetables from my local farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). It’s turned into a record of my quest to find local, wholesome, healthful foods that nourish me in mind, body, and soul. I also throw in a little travel, some recipes, tidbits of nutrition know-how, and a whole lot of love for food!
What can I do for you?
I'm here to provide useful nutrition knowledge, meaningful food experiences, and the occasional anecdote about a recipe gone bad. I'm also here to get you thinking about what food means to you. If this resonates with you, stick with me for the ride.
