Old Port

No, not some dusty old bottle of Portuguese dinner wine. More like Portland, Maine.

Portland is a lovely port town in Southern Maine that has a great food scene going on. After walking up and down the many cobblestone streets, we checked out the menu of dozens of restaurants featuring local fish, seasonal vegetables, and many types of ethnic cuisine.

Here are some whose menus looked delectable:
Old Port Grill and Raw Bar (where we ended up for dinner)

We stayed here, at a wonderful little inn, rife with pomegranates.
Greeted with a chocolate hello.
Bed.
And breakfast.
I could live here forever, reading and drinking tea.
And then there was the boat ride to a local island.
After an island walk and a ferry ride back, we ate soup at KamaSouptra, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich atPeanut Butter & Jelly Time, and a coffee for the road at Market House Coffee, all in the lovely and "co-op"-esque building of the Public Market House. Loved the indoor public market theme.

And we found an absolutely wonderful gem of a bookstore called Rabelais. They sell ONLY books on food and wine. I could have spent hours perusing the cookbooks and all the lovely things authors had to say about food. I easily could have spent a small fortune. The bookstore owners keep a dog and chickens in the store; they also had CSA shares ready to be picked up by their members. I'll be sure to be back and visit Samantha and Don soon. Follow them on Twitter at @RabelaisBooks or on Facebook!

Go to Portland, Maine. You'll love it.

Question of the Day: What did you do last weekend? Did you eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for dinner too?

  6. @ Lizzy - I have a digital SLR Canon Rebel. And, I have a little red point and shoot that I actually love better! It's a Canon powershot sd780 IS. LOVE love love it. Best camera I've ever owned! (and I've owned a few.... regular SLR and many many point and shoot digital that I lost along the way.)

Next time you go back to Portland, GO TO Rabelais. You will love it.

@NYGirl I photoshop some of them. I try to set up the shots ahead of time so that there is minimal photoshopping. I actually use picnik.com to photo edit (it's free!!). I take TONS of photos, and only post a select few. My tip for photography is to turn the flash off. So many food bloggers use a flash and it instantly erodes the quality of a photo, especially w/ food. Find a nice window or bright light, and set your camera to the tungsten light setting. Guaranteed better photos. HOpe this helps!

@Dawn THanks! You are so sweet.

@Starstruk I'm putting ROckland on the list now. Maybe when you move out there, I'll come visit you :-)
