Last week at the farmers' market, I picked up a pint of currants. I am always curious when I see new market items, and I immediately buy them. I happened to take them to Maine last weekend, thinking they were a snacky snack. Not so much. I mixed them with some cherries for a sweet and tart snack after a 3-mi run with Tim and Annie. The remainder hung out in the fridge, and I got a few strange looks and comments like "those look like eyes!" Oy.

I was determined to do something positive with them, so I schlepped them home from Maine and made some Currant Chutney. I've been spreading it on toast and mini-bagels for breakfast with a smudge of almond butter and it's divine. Take that, currant-haters!
Maine-Inspired Currant Chutney
1 cup pink currants (any color will work, these happen to be pink)
1 cup cranberry juice (I used up the unsweetened cranberry juice... we've been avoiding drinking it because it's so tart/bitter/nasty)
1 cup sugar
Boil all ingredients for 10-15 minutes. Pour into a clean jar, and refrigerate.
The product comes out sort of soupy (currants are not very gelatinous), but still makes a nice topping on toast or would taste delicious mixed into some Stonyfield plain yogurt, Greek or otherwise.

In other news, I saved up for a Canon digital SLR! I've been fooling around with it. Here are some samples:

Spicy (the cat) approves.
I'm stoked to be taking my it on vacation next week! More photos to come. I actually love blogging on/about vacation. I find these happen to be my best posts! So stay tuned for some vacation shenanigans...
Question of the Day: Do people make fun of the way you eat or the food you eat? If so, why do you think that is? Do you make fun of what other people eat?

Sometimes people do make fun of the food I eat! But it is mostly because the majority of Texas have never tried hummus and think tofu is poison. Also, most of them seem to be allergic to veggies. It's okay, though. My boyfriend is converting. I made him a hummus wrap the other day and he wouldn't stop raving about it! I am jealous of the SLR camera by the way.
ReplyDeletePeople ALWAYS make fun of my food. Always. I can't tell you how many weird looks I get followed by, "What the hell is THAT?" or "What on earth are you eating?"
ReplyDeleteI get harassed about being gluten free too. "you mean you can't eat BREAD? or Pasta? or drink BEER? Well what the hell CAN you eat??"
When I rattle off all of the things I can eat, they seem really surprised but then, never fails, I get, "Oh, well I could never do that."
I say, "You do what you gotta do."
I think it's bc people are afraid to look outside the box.
So happy about your camera--I love the picture of Spicy! I've been wanting one since...Andre Aggasi did the commercial for the Rebel!
People make fun of what I eat too!! I always remember in high school I'd bring hummus wraps to lunch and my friend would always say, "that's so gross!" Finally I blew up at her and was like "It's really rude to call something gross when someone else is eating it!" I actually lived with her after college, and by then, she ate hummus by the gallon. Haha!
ReplyDeleteThe currant chutney looks awesome... Such a pretty color!
And congrats on the camera... I'm really trying to save for one too :)

Congrats on your new SLR baby!!! Can't wait to see vaca pics.
ReplyDeleteI really dislike when people comment on my eating... If I order a sandwhich without the fries someone will say "omg why dont you get the fries?" Um maybe because I dont wan't them! or maybe i just had some for lunch! geez people, keep your eyes on your own plate haha
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of your cat! And yes some people tend to make fun of what I eat. Most of the time they think it is too healthy and tastes disgusting and won't even bother trying it when I tell them it's good.
ReplyDeleteI love the pics from your new camera! One of these days, I'll save up to buy a nice camera. It makes such a difference! The cat picture is awesome. My friends sometimes make fun of the way I eat because if I'm eating with my hands I tend to lick my fingers alot in between bites. Not the cleanest habit but I gotta get every last taste plus who likes sticky fingers! :)
