CSA Goods, Week 13

I was in such a hurry getting my CSA goodies prepped and ready for a week in the fridge, I forgot to take a picture. Instead, here they are in my veggie drawer: IMG_2573

  • Corn
  • beans
  • peppers
  • apples
  • peaches
  • eggplant
  • cucumbers
  • tomatoes

I also picked up a humongous heirloom tomato, some German striped green tomatoes, lettuce, and the last of the summer’s blueberries. AND, these weird-looking eggplant. In my quest to try everything vegetable, I just had to pick them up.

IMG_2567 Each baby eggplant is about the size of your thumb. I scoured the web looking for the name of these little gems, but to no avail. Anyone know the name of these? I’m beginning to think maybe they are part of the squash family. I guess we’ll find out later this week when I get around to cutting them open!

Question of the Day: What’s the weirdest vegetable you’ve ever eaten?

  1. I asked what they were and was told they are African Eggplant. I did a Google search and found very little, but I did find one picture that looks very similar to these. He told me that in Africa they eat them raw, dipped in peanut butter, so that sold me. But I must say that in my opinion anything tastes good dipped in peanut butter. I did eat a plain one later and it was not good at all. Glad I only got one tiny bunch (like in your picture).

  2. I cut one open (surgeon-style) before dinner to do some investigating as to what it was. Definitely has the insides of an eggplant. Thanks for the info Flo! I'm curious as to what they'd taste like dipped in peanut butter. FYI- did you know certain native African populations have virtually no peanut allergies, and peanuts are a staple crop? There's been a lot of research as to why this is, and why we see so many peanut allergies in the US. One theory is that they are processed in a way (here in the US) that may cause the proteins to be more obtrustive to our immune systems. There are tons of theories out there (hygiene hypothesis, etc.) Anyone have any thoughts on this?
