CSA, Week 8 - "I've Been A Bad Mother - Time To Redeem Myself"

I was away last weekend and did not pick up week 7 CSA box. Bad blogger.

I TOTALLY redeemed myself by picking up my box this week bright and early AND for buying extras for a vegetable platter I was bringing to a barbeque. This was the scene I pulled up to Sunday morning. I took photos for a good ten minutes before Curtis, the CSA manager, started giving me questioning looks. I bet fashion photographers feel this same way when they have a great model or a chic item of high fashion to photograph. I was in vegetable photographing heaven, as you'll see below.
I also discovered the Macro Setting on my camera, so from here on out, my food photography should improve. We can only hope.

So these little gems (below) didn't come in my CSA box, but were for sale at the farm stand. I felt them, smelled them, and still had no idea if they were a fruit or vegetable. The CSA manager said they are lemon cucumbers. Can't wait to cut them up and experiment!

This is me playing with my food. THIS is what I got in my box this week!!! (Plus a few additional items I purchased at the farm stand.)

RDs always recommend that all of us should be eating fruits and vegetables from all part of the rainbow, and eating 5-9 or more servings of these fiber- and nutrient-filled plant offerings each day.

Only eat white veggies? At a loss for purple ones? Take a look at the rainbow, and this week, try to incorporate one more colorful, local plant into your meals.

Eating this fruit and veggie rainbow should provide me with enough F&Vs for the week and satisfy my body's need for nutrients that are found in red fruits, green vegetables, etc. Stay tuned this week for my attempts at eating all that food. Well, maybe sharing a bit of it.

For lunch I knew we'd be going to a barbeque, so I chopped some heirloom tomatoes, peeled some CSA cucumbers, drizzled a bit of olive oil, chopped some basil, sprinkled a bit of sea salt and fresh ground pepper, and *BAM!* instant party dish.

25, 25, 25

August 17 - 8 days until I turn 25: Listen to your body cues. If you're dragging, find time to nap or get a good night sleep. If you're hungry, eat (fruits and vegetables). If you're full, stop eating (dessert). Our bodies response systems are smarter than we give them credit for. Sometimes, we even completely ignore these cues because we're always trying to be bigger, better, faster, stronger, smarter, younger/older; take a minute to listen to your body, and respond in a way that satisfies it in a healthy and restorative way.

Question of the Day: With all that beautiful produce, I'm gonna need some ideas for meals this week! What do you suggest?

  1. What gorgeous photos! I am now obsessed with my macro setting, after hearing about it at HLS. I am still struggling with the light vs. flash issue, but I'm working on it!

Can't wait to hear what you think of those funny cucumbers.

  3. Finding out about that macro setting was amazing! I love the pic of the apples & blueberries. For a meal idea, maybe try to recreate those grilled balsamic veggies we had for lunch? Yum!
